Selenium in the News
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Federal health officials launched on Tuesday the world's biggest prostate cancer prevention study, which will examine whether the nutrients vitamin E and selenium ward off the disease.
Selenium and vitamin E, both taken by many people as dietary supplements, are antioxidants that are believed to help control cell damage that can lead to cancer.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and researchers around the country said the study involving 32,400 healthy men being recruited at more than 400 sites in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada will take up to 12 years to complete.
"Both of these dietary supplements have demonstrated in separate prevention trials that they may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Because these trials were not designed with prostate cancer incidence as their primary end point, this SELECT trial has been designed to answer that very question definitively," Coltman added.

Get smart about selenium and prostate cancer
Mineral supplements may help prevent disease, studies find By Karen Collins, R.D.June 25, 2004. A recent study links the consumption of the essential mineral selenium with a lower risk of prostate cancer. There are now seven population studies in the past six years that examined the possible connection between selenium and prostate cancer. All but one of them have found selenium protective. Yet, since scientists are still uncertain how prostate cancer.
The latest study, however, is especially important because it is the largest study to date. It tracked the health of the men participating for up to 13 years. The duration of the study is significant because prostate cancer is usually a slow growing cancer, influenced by diet and lifestyle over decades as it develops. In this recent study, men with the highest levels of selenium in their blood were about half as likely to develop advanced prostate cancer as the men with the lowest blood selenium. Similarly, two past studies show that those with the lowest blood selenium have a moderately increased risk of prostate cancer.

Selenium Supplements may help Prevent Skin, Prostrate, Colorectal and lung Cancer
A new study looking at the effect of selenium supplements on cancer has found a 50 per cent reduction in deaths from cancer in those taking supplements.
Researchers at the Arizona Cancer Center set out to test the effectiveness of selenium supplements on the prevention of skin cancer in over 1300 patients. Participants received a placebo or 200-mcg selenium per day over a period of 4.5 years and a total follow up of 6.4 years. While the results did not show any reduction in skin cancer risk, the selenium group had a 37 per cent reduction in cancer incidence and a 50 per cent reduction in cancer mortality. The effects appeared strongest for prostate (63 per cent lower risk), colorectal (58 per cent lower risk) and lung (53 per cent lower risk) cancers.

Selenium: its role in the prevention of cancer of the colon is confirmed.
After its protective power against prostate cancer had been shown, more and more elements seem to establish with certainty, the benefits of selenium in the prevention of cancer of the colon.
An American study recently confirmed that a dietary supplement of selenium prevents the risk of colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon): this study was carried out on 1, 312 people and consisted of a daily administration of 200 microgrammes of yeast enriched with selenium. The protective effect observed was more significant in people who had initially shown low blood of levels of selenium or in smokers. (1)
At the end of 2004, researchers at the University of Arizona had shown that people presenting raised blood levels of selenium had a lesser risk of developing cancer of the colon. (2)
